ABT Sportsline: Innovative Technology

In the world of automotive progress, standing still means taking a step back. True to this motto, ABT Sportsline, the global leader in refining vehicles from the VW Group, has developed groundbreaking technology for the recently unveiled special models, the RS 6 and RS 7 Legacy Edition. This technology allows for an impressive increase in the performance of the 4.0-liter bi-turbo engines (DJPB), taking them from 603 kW (820 PS, V-max 330 km/h)* to an astonishing 736 kW (1000 PS)** and approximately 1150 Nm.

The Audi RS 6 and RS 7 in the Legacy Edition

At the heart of this innovation lies the advanced IWI system. The Indirect Water/Ethanol Injection (IWI) is located in front of the engine’s two throttle valves. This additional injection system is regulated by an electronic control unit specially developed by ABT Sportsline and works seamlessly with the AEC system. Ethanol was chosen due to its availability and excellent physical properties. “The IWI technology offers us the thermodynamic advantages to provide enduring performance in these performance regions. Through IWI injection, we ensure strong internal engine cooling, allowing for more intake air or oxygen to be supplied to the fuel combustion process, resulting in sustained higher performance,” explains Thomas Biermaier, CEO of ABT Sportsline, describing the operation of this innovative system.

Technological Innovations

Activation of the IWI system is done through the RS button on the RS 6 LE and RS 7 LE’s steering wheel. To activate it, the RS button must be held down for one second in one of the two RS modes during the driving cycle. Subsequently, the additional power is unleashed as needed. With the IWI system activated, maximum performance can be extracted with every forceful press of the accelerator pedal.

1000 PS with ABT

For the 1000 PS conversion, additional components from ABT Sportsline are required. These include a carbon intake system with enlarged turbo air inlets and optimized turbochargers. ABT Sportsline has also developed special intercoolers with enlarged air inlets in the front bumper for both vehicles. The package also includes forged pistons with reduced compression, reinforced connecting rods and piston pins, a sport catalytic converter with a gasoline particulate filter, an exhaust system, and additional oil coolers.

Future-Ready Refueling

The Indirect Water/Ethanol-Injection (IWI) is supplied via a tank (usable tank volume of 15 liters) in the trunk well. The filling neck for the ABT IWI liquid is located under the standard fuel tank cap. Ideally, one tank filling of IWI can last for up to 3000 kilometers, equivalent to a consumption rate of 0.5 liters per 100 kilometers. The tank level is monitored by a level sensor and displayed on the myABT app or through Apple CarPlay on the MMI screen. The necessary ABT IWI liquid can conveniently be replenished using the MyABT app. In addition to various vehicle performance data, the app also provides information about the system status and the IWI tank level.
