What is an oil pressure switch and how does it work?
The oil pressure switch is a component often installed in engines and machines that permanently monitors the oil pressure in the system. It ensures that there is no critical pressure drop in the engine. Otherwise, this can lead to serious damage to the engine.
If there is a drop in pressure, the oil pressure switch sends an electrical signal to the engine control light or control unit. The oil pressure indicator light in the vehicle's on-board computer lights up and informs the driver that there is critical oil pressure in the engine.
How it works is simply explained
The component is actively connected to the engine's oil circuit and reacts as soon as the oil pressure fluctuates and reaches certain values. If a precisely defined limit value is exceeded, the switch closes or opens a circuit.
The oil pressure display in the car is now active and indicates that the pressure/fill level needs to be checked. While older engines have a direct connection between the switch and the engine, newer modern engines have an on-board computer connected in between. This allows the driver to access further details such as an exact oil pressure value.
Common areas of application
Oil pressure switches are used in all conceivable areas in which engines and machines work with oil circuits. These include, among other things, cars and motorcycles. But oil switches are also essential in construction machinery, commercial vehicles and agricultural machinery and ensure reliable and safe operation. But monitoring components have also become indispensable in industrial systems and other areas with hydraulic systems.
Buying an oil pressure switch – what should I pay attention to?
If you would like to order a new oil pressure switch, you should pay attention to crucial purchasing criteria. This is the only way to ensure that the switch works optimally and is compatible with the vehicle (e.g. Golf 4 or Opel Corsa C).
We have summarized the most important criteria for you:
Compatibility: It should be noted that the oil pressure switch fits the vehicle model and engine. For example, you can find an oil pressure sensor for VW or BMW. If in doubt, ask for the correct part number.
Connection type: The appropriate connection type is also important in order to connect the sensor to the vehicle's electrical system. Among other things, connections with cable lugs are available. At the same time, the screw-in thread of the oil pressure switch must be compatible.
Pressure range: It is also known as the switching pressure range and must correspond to the possible pressure values of the engine. Otherwise, values that are too low or too high can lead to a malfunction.
Operating temperature: Also pay attention to the temperature prevailing in the engine. It must match that of the oil pressure switch to avoid errors.
Difference between oil pressure switch and oil pressure sensor
A switch only works with two switching stages: active or inactive and passes on the corresponding current signal to the oil pressure indicator light, which lights up or does not light up. An oil pressure sensor, on the other hand, works continuously. It measures the pressure continuously and in this way always forwards constant values to the on-board computer. Sensors are predominantly installed in modern engine systems.
How do I know if an oil pressure switch is defective?
You can tell whether an oil switch in your car is defective based on various features and warning signals. A common sign is when the oil pressure indicator light flashes, lights up permanently or emits an irregular warning signal. At the same time, it must be ensured that the rest of the oil system is working properly and that there is enough oil in the engine. Furthermore, if the indicator light goes out permanently when starting the engine, it can be a sign that the switch is defective.
Additionally, make sure that there are no visible leaks or oil residue around the switch due to a leaky switch housing. With new engines with an on-board computer, error messages such as: B. a pressure that is too high indicates that there is a defect.
If any of the symptoms described above occur, further inspection steps are advisable. For example, you can check the electrical connections for error-free current flow or access further diagnostic data via the on-board computer. If clear instructions are displayed here, you should replace the switch immediately to ensure smooth and safe operation of the motor and to prevent consequential damage.
Why does an oil pressure switch break?
Wear/material fatigue, corrosion on the contacts or dirt can be responsible for a switch defect. But pressure peaks or temperatures that are too high are also a possible cause.
Instructions & tips for changing the oil pressure switch
For many vehicle types and engines, replacing the oil pressure switch can be completed in just a few steps. We will introduce you to all the necessary steps in simple step-by-step instructions. Important: The procedure may vary depending on the vehicle and engine type. Therefore, check the workshop manual for all the necessary steps.
- Turn off the vehicle engine and secure the vehicle.
- Remove the old switch. To do this, remove the protective cap, remove the power plug of the oil pressure switch and unscrew it with a tool.
- Now insert the new oil pressure switch into the socket and tighten it completely.
- Finally, reconnect the power cable, put on the protective cap and start the engine to check that the switch is working properly.
Other helpful tips:
- Always make sure to tighten the new switch with the correct torque. Use a torque wrench for this.
- Ensure compatibility of the new switch with the motor. For example, there may be differences when you change the oil pressure switch on a 1.4 TSI or a 2.0 TFSI engine.
